ETFs and New Energy Sources

J. Alex Tarquinio of the New York Times explored the recent boom in alternative energy ETFs in the article Funds, Too, Are Mining New Energy Sources.

According to Tarquinio, there are at least 16 ETFs that focus on new energy sources and more than half were created this year.

He mentions the wind energy funds First Trust ISE Global Wind Energy Index fund (FAN) and PowerShares Global Wind Energy Portfolio (PWND) as well as the Van Eck Nuclear Energy ETF which competes with the PowerShares Global Nuclear Energy Portfolio (PKN).

The article points out that although the funds have attracted a lot new investment, they are trading at significant discounts to the level at which they first came to market.
